Holiday Gifts for Nature Photographers
The holiday shopping time is here. It’s time to start thinking about what to get for nature photographers that are on your shopping list. Or if you are a nature photographer, gifts you can recommend for others to get for you.
I’ve listed several items below that I have used and found useful for my nature. For some items, I don’t recommend a specific items but more of a category of products.
Bean Bag. This is useful for photographing from a car window, on the hood of a car or for a low shot on the ground. I fill the bean bag with wild bird seed. It also packs easily in a suitcase when empty. Just fill it up with bird seed upon arrival.
Photo Vest. A lot of people like photo bags. When possible, I use a photo vest. A good photo vest can carry a lot of equipment and you don’t have to carry a bag around, set it down, or watch it so someone doesn’t make off with it. I like the Domke Photo Vest but there are several others on the market.
3-Stop Graduated Neutral Density Filter. This is a handy piece of gear for landscape photographers. It can it can be used to darken a bright sky so that highlights are not lost in a photograph. I even use it in my HDR photos to help ensure I don’t blow out the highlights. My preference is B+W filters but I’ve also used Tiffin filters.
Photo Gloves. It gets cold doing outdoor photography in the late fall and winter. A good pair of gloves that still allow dexterity in the fingers to press the shutter and change controls is essential. I use hunting gloves that flip back to expose the fingers. You can also insert a hand warmer in the finger compartment add a little more warmth.
AKVIS ArtWork. I recently came across this photo processing software that does a great job of turning nature photos into works of art. ArtWork V.7.0 processes photos into 7 different painting styles: Oil, Watercolor, Gouache, Comics, Pen & Ink, Linocut, and Pastel. See my related blogs below for more information.
