Best L-Mount Lenses for Night Sky Photography: 10 Lenses Compared

One of the reasons I added the Panasonic Lumix S9 to my camera kit was its potential as a small full-frame camera for night-sky photography.

That doesn’t mean I’m abandoning OM System or Micro Four Thirds for this kind of work. I still value the system’s compact lenses, portability, and familiar handling. Instead, the S9 gives me an opportunity to compare the two systems under the same night sky—and to see how much difference a larger sensor makes when balanced against lens size, cost, and the overall travel kit.

My upcoming aurora photography trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, gave me a reason to look more seriously at wide-angle L-mount lenses.

That started what became a much larger and more detailed lens search than I expected. Since I had already done the research, I thought I’d share the results to hopefully save you some time if you’re looking for an L-mount lens for aurora or night-sky photography.

There are several promising L-mount lenses for night-sky photography, ranging from affordable manual-focus primes to large professional lenses designed with astrophotography in mind. But I wasn’t simply looking for the lens with the best laboratory performance. I wanted to find the option that made the most sense for the Panasonic Lumix S9, the Fairbanks trip, and night-sky photography beyond it.

My Criteria for an L-Mount Night-Sky Lens

I evaluated the lenses using a combination of optical, practical, and financial considerations:

• Focal length and field of view
• Maximum aperture (limited to lenses between f/1.4 and f/2.8)
• Corner performance when used wide open
• Coma and star shape
• Physical size and weight
• Weather resistance
• Price
• Manual versus autofocus operation
• Fit with the compact S9 concept
• Usefulness beyond the Fairbanks trip

These practical considerations changed the ranking considerably. A large, expensive f/1.4 lens might technically be the strongest astrophotography option in the group. But if it weighs more than the camera and occupies a large section of my travel bag, it may not be the best lens for how I plan to use the Lumix S9.

How I Rated the Lenses

The ratings below are not laboratory optical scores. They represent how well each lens fits my combination of night-sky performance, focal length, size, weight, price, and usability with the Lumix S9.

That distinction is important.

A lens can have outstanding optical performance and still receive a lower overall rating because it is too large, too heavy, or too expensive for the compact travel kit I am trying to build.

Prices are approximate and reflect what I found during my research; you may find different prices or availability depending on when and where you shop.

The Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 is one of the most versatile lenses in this comparison.

At 16mm, it provides a very wide field of view for aurora and night landscapes, while the constant f/2.8 aperture is fast enough for serious night-sky photography. Testing shows very strong sharpness through most of the frame at 16mm and f/2.8, with coma generally well controlled. The extreme corners are not perfect, and vignetting is noticeable wide open, but overall night-sky performance appears very good. Flare control is also strong, which can be useful when photographing around artificial lights at night.

One of the biggest advantages of the Sigma is compositional flexibility. A very wide focal length can be useful when an aurora stretches across a large portion of the sky, while zooming toward 28mm makes it possible to tighten the composition and give more visual weight to the foreground. That flexibility is difficult to match with a fixed-focal-length prime.

On the practical side, the Sigma weighs only 15.9 ounces (450g), provides autofocus and full electronic communication, uses a standard 72mm filter thread, and has an internal zoom design that keeps the lens the same length throughout the zoom range.

The Sigma 16–28mm has a dust- and splash-resistant seal at the mount rather than full weather sealing, so for rain or wet snow I’d keep a rain cover handy.

That combination makes it useful well beyond aurora photography. The 16–28mm range works well for Milky Way photography, landscapes, travel, interiors, and other wide-angle subjects.

The more I researched the Sigma 16–28mm, the more it stood out as one of the best balances of night-sky performance, portability, compositional flexibility, and usefulness beyond astrophotography.

The Brightin Star 12mm f/2.8 became one of the most interesting lenses in my search largely because of its exceptionally wide field of view.

A large or overhead aurora can occupy an enormous portion of the sky, and 12mm provides considerably more room for both the aurora and an interesting foreground than the 18–20mm options.

Full-frame astrophotography testing I found showed some corner coma, but it appeared relatively modest for such an extreme ultra-wide lens. This suggests that the lens should remain usable at or near f/2.8, which is important for keeping exposure times short enough to preserve detail and movement in the aurora.

The lens is fully manual and provides no electronic lens or aperture information to the camera. Manual focus is well suited to night-sky photography, where focus is typically set carefully on a bright star and then left unchanged. The lack of electronic communication is mainly a convenience issue because the camera does not record the selected aperture in the image metadata. At 19.4 ounces (550g), weight is the more meaningful compromise for a compact S9 travel kit.

Brightin Star does not list the 12mm f/2.8 as weather sealed, so I would use a rain cover in rain or wet snow.

The more I researched aurora focal lengths, however, the more I came to view 12mm as a specialized option rather than the best choice for every composition. It can be excellent for large or overhead displays, but focal lengths around 14–20mm can make it easier to balance the night sky with the foreground.

At approximately $499, the Brightin Star offers an unusually wide 12mm field of view at a price well below many premium alternatives. That combination of coverage, promising wide-open performance, and price still makes it one of the strongest ultra-wide options in this comparison.

The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 may offer one of the strongest combinations of focal length, aperture, features, and price in this comparison.

Sixteen millimeters is noticeably wider than the Panasonic 18mm and Sigma 20mm options, while the f/1.8 maximum aperture provides a substantial light-gathering advantage over an f/2.8 lens. For photographing aurora, that additional light can help keep shutter speeds shorter and preserve more structure and movement in the display.

The Viltrox also provides autofocus and full electronic communication with the camera, making it considerably more versatile than the manual-focus ultra-wide alternatives. Its usefulness extends well beyond aurora photography to landscapes, travel, interiors, and other low-light work.

Astrophotography testing shows some corner coma at f/1.8, although overall sharpness is strong and the corner performance improves when the lens is stopped down.

At 19.4 ounces (550g), the Viltrox is not especially light for a prime, but its weight is still reasonable considering the f/1.8 aperture, autofocus, and electronic communication.

One concern is cold-weather operation. The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 has weather sealing and internal dust protection, but Viltrox specifies an operating range down to approximately 14°F (-10°C), and I found reports of focusing or electronic communication problems below that temperature. If you plan to photograph the night sky in very cold conditions, this may be a consideration.

At approximately $580, the Viltrox remains one of the best values in the group.

The Panasonic 18mm f/1.8 is a strong general-purpose wide-angle prime for the Lumix S9.

It is fast, relatively small and light, fully integrated with the camera, and weather resistant. Its f/1.8 maximum aperture is a significant advantage for both aurora and conventional night-sky photography.

An 18mm lens is wide enough for many night landscapes, Milky Way compositions, and aurora photographs. However, several lenses in this search offer a wider field of view, leaving more room for an expansive aurora and a foreground within the same composition.

The main drawback for this comparison is value. At approximately $1,000, it is an expensive prime, and that price is harder to justify when its usefulness is limited to a single 18mm focal length.

The Panasonic remains one of the strongest compact primes in the group, especially if size, weather resistance, and a fast aperture are priorities. For my night-sky kit, however, I wanted more compositional flexibility than a single focal length provides.

The Sigma 20mm f/2 offers an appealing combination of optical performance, compact size, and practical features.

At only 13.1 ounces (370g), it is a good physical match for the Lumix S9. Its f/2 maximum aperture is fast enough for serious night-sky photography, and the lens also includes autofocus and a physical aperture ring.

A 20mm lens can work well for Milky Way landscapes, aurora photographs, and other night-sky compositions. However, it offers a less expansive field of view than several of the other lenses in this search, which provides less flexibility when trying to include a broad section of sky and foreground in the same frame.

The lens mount includes a dust- and splash-resistant seal, although the lens does not have more extensive weather sealing.

At approximately $769, the Sigma is not inexpensive, but its compact construction, autofocus, aperture ring, and usefulness beyond night-sky photography add to its long-term value.

It is a well-rounded lens that fits the compact S9 concept, but its 20mm focal length is less versatile for wide night-sky compositions than some of the broader options in this comparison.

The Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art deserves consideration because it combines a genuinely useful ultra-wide zoom range with strong night-sky credentials.

Starting at 14mm provides expansive coverage for large aurora displays, while the ability to zoom throughout the 14–24mm range adds valuable compositional flexibility. That could be especially useful when the shape and location of the aurora changes quickly and I want to adjust the balance between the sky and foreground without changing lenses.

The constant f/2.8 aperture is well suited to night-sky photography, and the lens is designed to maintain strong image quality toward the edges of the frame, an important consideration when photographing stars.

The tradeoffs are size, weight, and cost. At 28 ounces (795g), 5.16 inches (131mm) long, and approximately $1,500, it represents a substantial investment in both money and bag space.

The Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 Art has extensive dust- and splash-resistant sealing throughout the lens along with a water- and oil-repellent front coating, making it better suited to challenging outdoor conditions than many of the other candidates.

For a photographer building a dedicated full-frame landscape and astrophotography kit, the combination of 14mm coverage, zoom flexibility, and strong optical performance could make it an excellent choice. For my Fairbanks travel kit, however, its size, weight, and price are difficult to justify compared with smaller alternatives.

My Rating: 7.5/10

The Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Lite Zero-D is the premium alternative to the Brightin Star 12mm.

It offers the same compelling 12mm field of view in a shorter and lighter package. At 16.8 ounces (475g), it saves about 2.6 ounces (75g) compared with the Brightin Star. Laowa also has a long history of producing unusual ultra-wide-angle lenses, and the low-distortion Zero-D design gives the lens additional potential for landscapes, interiors, and architecture. I also have and like the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 for Micro Four Thirds, which gives me some confidence in the brand’s ultra-wide designs.

The difficulty for me is value. At roughly $699, I would be paying about $200 more while still getting an f/2.8 manual-focus lens. The smaller size, lower weight, and low-distortion design are real advantages, but they do not significantly change its capabilities for photographing the aurora.

Also, the Laowa does not appear to have weather sealing, so I would use a rain cover in rain or wet snow.

If I were looking for a permanent premium ultra-wide lens that I expected to use regularly for architecture, landscapes, and other photography, the calculation might be different. For this particular project, however, the additional cost was difficult to justify when the Brightin Star provides the same 12mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture for considerably less.

From a pure astrophotography perspective, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is one of the most impressive lenses in this comparison.

Fourteen millimeters provides an expansive field of view for broad night skies, while the f/1.4 maximum aperture provides a two-stop advantage over an f/2.8 lens. That additional light can help keep shutter speeds shorter for aurora, Milky Way, and other night-sky photography while also reducing the need to push ISO as high.

The lens was also designed specifically with astrophotography in mind. It includes strong correction of sagittal coma along with features such as a manual focus lock, lens-heater retainer, rear filter holder, and removable tripod socket.

The lens also has extensive dust- and splash-resistant sealing along with a water- and oil-repellent front coating, making it well suited to demanding outdoor night-sky conditions.

The problem for my Lumix S9 kit is size, weight, and price.

At 41.3 ounces (1,170g) and 5.9 inches (149.9mm) long, the Sigma weighs more than twice as much as either the Brightin Star 12mm f/2.8 or Viltrox 16mm f/1.8. At approximately $1,839, it is also one of the most expensive lenses in this comparison.

For a photographer building a dedicated full-frame astrophotography kit, the Sigma could be an outstanding choice. For my S9-based travel kit and the Fairbanks trip, however, its exceptional optical capabilities do not outweigh the size, weight, and cost.

The TTArtisan 14mm f/2.8 is an intriguing budget option for night-sky photography.

Fourteen millimeters is an excellent focal length for aurora and wide night landscapes, while the approximately $200 price makes it one of the least expensive ways to add an ultra-wide full-frame lens to an L-mount kit. At about 15.5 ounces (440g), it is also relatively compact and light.

Night-sky testing shows good detail through much of the frame at f/2.8, but stars become noticeably distorted or smeared toward the outer edges and corners. Stopping down to f/4 improves the problem, although that also gives up a stop of light that can be valuable when photographing moving aurora.

The lens also shows fairly heavy vignetting wide open, but its physical aperture ring, manual focusing, compact size, and 77mm filter capability add to its usefulness for landscape and night photography.

The TTArtisan does not have weather sealing, so I would use a rain cover in rain or wet snow.

For approximately $200, the TTArtisan offers a lot of capability. However, the weaker edge and corner performance at f/2.8 keeps it below the stronger aurora options in this comparison.

The Brightin Star 14mm f/2.8 has several characteristics that initially make it appealing for aurora photography.

Fourteen millimeters provides a wide field of view, the lens is relatively inexpensive, and the physical aperture ring works well with the Lumix S9’s limited external controls.

The weakness is wide-open night-sky performance. Full-frame testing shows noticeably stretched stars and coma toward the edges at f/2.8.

Stopping down improves the corners, but that reduces one of the main advantages of choosing an f/2.8 lens for aurora photography. I want to shoot at or near maximum aperture so I can keep shutter speeds short enough to preserve structure and movement in the aurora.

Brightin Star does not list the 14mm f/2.8 as weather sealed, so I would use a rain cover in rain or wet snow.

At approximately $279, the Brightin Star remains an inexpensive way to get a 14mm full-frame lens. However, the weaker edge performance at f/2.8 makes it less attractive for night-sky photography, especially when other options provide stronger wide-open performance.

My Picks by Category

After working through the individual lenses, I found that choosing a single winner oversimplified the decision. Different lenses rise to the top depending on whether the priority is price, portability, optical performance, versatility, or maximum field of view.

Best Value Night-Sky Lens: Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 L

The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 offers one of the strongest combinations of price and capability in this group.

At approximately $580, it combines a very useful 16mm focal length with a fast f/1.8 aperture, autofocus, full electronic communication, and strong overall image quality.

Its cold-weather operating range may be a concern for photographers working in very low temperatures, but for most night-sky photography, the combination of focal length, speed, features, and price makes the Viltrox my choice for best overall value.

Best Travel Night-Sky Lens: Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary

For travel, I put more emphasis on size, weight, image quality, versatility, and how useful the lens is beyond a single night-sky trip.

At only 15.9 ounces (450g), the Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 is remarkably light for a constant-f/2.8 full-frame ultra-wide zoom. It also provides strong night-sky performance while giving considerably more compositional flexibility than a fixed-focal-length prime.

The 16–28mm range is useful for aurora, Milky Way photography, night landscapes, interiors, and general travel photography. That combination of portability and versatility makes the Sigma my choice for best travel night-sky lens.

Best Ultra-Wide Night-Sky Lens: Brightin Star 12mm f/2.8

If maximum field of view is the priority, the Brightin Star 12mm f/2.8 remains the most interesting lens in the comparison.

Its 12mm focal length provides significantly more coverage than the 14–20mm alternatives and can be especially useful for very large sections of the night sky, overhead aurora, dramatic foreground compositions, and other situations where an extreme ultra-wide perspective works well.

The Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Lite provides the same focal length in a somewhat smaller and lighter package, but at a higher price. For photographers specifically looking for an affordable extreme-wide night-sky lens, I prefer the value offered by the Brightin Star.

Best Overall Night-Sky Lens: Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art

If size, weight, and price were less important, the Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art would be my choice as the best overall night-sky lens in this group.

Starting at 14mm provides an expansive field of view, while the ability to zoom throughout the 14–24mm range provides something the primes cannot: compositional flexibility without changing lenses.

That can be particularly useful for night-sky photography because the best balance between the sky and foreground can vary considerably from one scene to another. The lens also combines that flexibility with strong optical performance and a constant f/2.8 aperture.

Its 28-ounce weight, larger dimensions, and approximately $1,500 price make it harder to justify for a small Lumix S9 travel kit, but those compromises do not change how capable it is as a dedicated full-frame night-sky lens.

The Lens I Chose for Fairbanks

After all of this research, I chose the Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for my Fairbanks trip.

The Sigma ultimately gave me the best balance for the L-mount night-sky kit I am trying to build. Sixteen millimeters is wide enough for most aurora and night-sky compositions, while the ability to zoom to 28mm gives me much more control over composition than a fixed-focal-length prime. The constant f/2.8 aperture is fast enough for serious night-sky photography, and the optical performance looks strong enough to use the lens wide open.

At only 15.9 ounces (450g), it also fits the compact travel concept behind the Lumix S9. Just as importantly, the 16–28mm range should make the lens useful beyond Fairbanks for Milky Way photography, landscapes, travel, interiors, and other wide-angle photography.

The other finalists each had compelling advantages. The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 is faster and less expensive, but the cold-weather concern and fixed focal length made the Sigma a better overall fit for this trip. The Brightin Star 12mm f/2.8 remains a fascinating option when an extreme ultra-wide perspective is the priority, but 12mm is more specialized. And while the Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 Art may be the strongest overall night-sky lens in this comparison, its additional size, weight, and cost work against the type of S9 kit I am trying to build.

Fairbanks will be the real test. I plan to use the Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 with the Lumix S9 for aurora and other night-sky photography and report back on the results.

I’ll also have my OM System equipment with me, so I should have an opportunity to make some real-world full-frame versus Micro Four Thirds comparisons under the same night sky.

For now, the research is finished. The Sigma 16–28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is the lens going to Fairbanks.
