My Brand-New Panasonic Lumix L10 Already Has Sensor Dust
My Panasonic Lumix L10 is only a few weeks old, and it already has sensor dust.
I confirmed it by photographing a clear blue sky using all four of the camera’s aspect ratios. A dark curved mark appears in the 3:2 and 16:9 images but is cropped out in 4:3 and 1:1.
Normally, sensor dust is an annoyance I can handle myself. The L10 has a permanently attached lens, however, so I cannot access the sensor. I have submitted a warranty claim and will need to send the camera in for cleaning.
That is especially disappointing because sensor dust was already one of the concerns surrounding the L10.
The original Panasonic Lumix LX100 developed a reputation for dust getting inside the fixed-lens camera and appearing on the sensor. Panasonic said the design was improved for the LX100 II, but reports did not disappear completely. Similar concerns have also been raised by some Leica D-Lux 8 owners.
The L10 uses the same general type of retractable fixed zoom lens, so photographers were already wondering whether the old problem could return.
On my camera, it has.

How I Discovered the Dust
I first noticed the dark mark in a photograph with a clear sky near the upper-right side of the frame.
After cleaning and checking the front of the lens, I took test photographs using all four of the L10’s aspect ratios:
- 4:3
- 3:2
- 16:9
- 1:1
The mark appears clearly in the 3:2 and 16:9 images. It does not appear in the 4:3 or 1:1 images. That makes sense because of the L10’s multi-aspect sensor.
The different aspect ratios do not simply crop down from the exact same image area. The wider 3:2 and 16:9 formats use more of the sensor’s horizontal area. The dust appears to be located near the far-right edge of the sensor, where it is included in the wider formats but cropped out in 4:3 and 1:1.
This explained why I was only seeing the mark in certain images.
The LX100 Sensor-Dust History
Concern about sensor dust in this type of camera did not begin with the L10.
The original Panasonic Lumix LX100 combined a relatively large Four Thirds sensor with a fast 24–75mm equivalent f/1.7–2.8 retractable zoom lens. It was an appealing design, but some owners reported dust getting inside the camera and appearing on the sensor.
Because the lens was permanently attached, owners could not clean the sensor themselves and the camera required service.
When Panasonic introduced the LX100 II, the company said the original LX100’s collapsible lens design made it more susceptible to dust and that the newer camera had been improved, suggesting Panasonic was aware of the concern and had taken steps to reduce it.
However, owner reports involving dust did not disappear completely. Some LX100 II users still reported internal dust, and similar reports have appeared from some Leica D-Lux 8 owners.
That does not prove that most LX100 II or D-Lux 8 cameras are affected. Online reports tend to concentrate problems, and there is no reliable public information showing how common the issue is.
Still, the history was enough to make photographers cautious when Panasonic announced the L10.
The L10 again uses a Four Thirds sensor paired with a fixed, retractable 24–75mm equivalent f/1.7–2.8 zoom lens. Even if the internal design is not identical, the similarities naturally brought the old dust concern back into the discussion.
Why Dust Is a Bigger Problem on the L10
Sensor dust is not unusual on interchangeable-lens cameras.
With my OM System cameras, I can remove the lens and use a blower or perform a careful sensor cleaning if necessary.
The L10 is different.
Because the lens is permanently attached, any internal dust requires professional service. A problem that might take only a few minutes to address on another camera now requires a warranty claim, packing the camera and sending it to a service center.
That is particularly frustrating because the L10 is a new premium camera.
One of the advantages of a fixed-lens camera is convenience. There are no lenses to change, and the camera is designed to be ready whenever I turn it on.
That convenience disappears quickly when internal dust requires professional service.

Warranty Claim and Sending the L10 In for Service
I registered the L10 after purchasing it and submitted a warranty-service request to Panasonic.
Since the camera is only a few weeks old, I expect the cleaning to be covered under warranty, but Panasonic will make the final determination.
Panasonic responded with a service ticket and shipping instructions. The process itself was straightforward. I received a service number, instructions to package the camera carefully, and a request to ship the camera to their service center within 45 days. Panasonic also requested that I include only accessories related to the problem and use a carrier with tracking information.
However, one part of the process was disappointing.
Because this is a warranty repair on a brand-new camera, I expected Panasonic would provide a prepaid shipping label. Instead, I am responsible for the shipping cost. Panasonic also states that they are not responsible for damage during transit, which means I need to add insurance coverage to protect a nearly $1,500 camera while it is being shipped.
I realize many companies handle returns differently, and perhaps I have been spoiled by the convenience of retailers like Amazon. Still, it is frustrating to incur additional shipping and insurance costs on a camera that has required warranty service so early in its life.
The bigger concern is the ownership experience. A fixed-lens camera is designed for simplicity and convenience, yet a problem I cannot resolve myself now requires packing the camera, paying for shipping and insurance, and waiting for service.
I decided not to wait until the entire warranty process is complete before publishing this article. People are purchasing the L10 now, and the dust concern was already part of the conversation surrounding the camera. I will update this article with the warranty service experience.
Should L10 Owners Be Concerned?
It is too early to know whether my camera represents a broader L10 problem.
I also cannot tell when or how the dust reached the sensor. It could have been present from manufacturing, or it could have entered during normal operation as the retractable lens extended and retracted.
I went back through my saved L10 photographs and did not find clear evidence of the mark. However, I did not have any saved images using the wider 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratios where the dust is visible, so it is possible the mark was present earlier but went unnoticed.
What I can say is that internal sensor dust can occur on the L10, and in my case it appeared—or at least became detectable—within the first few weeks of ownership.
L10 owners may want to test their cameras using all four aspect ratios. A dust mark near the outer edge of the sensor could be invisible in 4:3 but appear in 3:2 or 16:9.
The test is simple. Photograph a clear sky or evenly lit light-colored surface at a smaller aperture (like f/16) and examine each image on a larger screen. Look for a dark mark that remains in the same location.
Final Thoughts
I still enjoy using the Lumix L10, and this does not erase everything I like about the camera.
Its compact size, fast zoom lens, multi-aspect sensor, autofocus, articulating screen and extensive customization make it a very capable travel and everyday camera.
But finding sensor dust after only a few weeks is difficult to overlook.
The fixed lens is one of the reasons the L10 is so convenient to carry and use. It is also the reason I cannot solve this problem myself.
Whether this is simply an isolated issue or something that affects more L10 cameras will take time to understand.
