Panasonic Lumix L10 vs OM System OM-5 II: Which Is the Better Micro Four Thirds Travel Camera?
The Panasonic Lumix L10 and OM System OM-5 II use the same general Micro Four Thirds sensor format, but take very different approaches to travel photography.
The L10 is an all-in-one compact with a built-in Leica 24–75mm-equivalent f/1.7–2.8 zoom. The OM-5 II is an interchangeable-lens camera with class-leading stabilization, weather sealing and can utilize an extensive selection of Micro Four Thirds lenses.
Is the better travel camera the smaller, simpler all-in-one option or the more adaptable camera system? To find out, I’m comparing them across eight equally weighted criteria:

Why the OM System 12–45mm f/4 PRO?
Since the OM-5 II is an interchangeable-lens camera, it needs a reference lens for a complete-kit comparison. I’m using the OM System 12–45mm f/4 PRO because it is available as an official OM-5 II kit and provides a similar standard-zoom range. Its 24–90mm-equivalent coverage extends slightly beyond the L10’s 24–75mm lens, while remaining compact, weather-sealed and compatible with in-camera Focus Stacking.
It is not an exact equivalent. Its constant f/4 aperture is slower than the L10’s f/1.7–2.8 zoom, and the complete kit is larger and heavier. Those differences are part of the comparison rather than reasons to choose a different reference lens.
Packability (Size and Weight)
For travel, the relevant measurement is not body weight but the weight and size of the complete kit.

The OM System OM-5 II body is lighter, but that advantage disappears once the 12–45mm lens is attached. The complete kit weighs 164g (5.8 oz.) more than the L10, or approximately 32%. Its attached lens also occupies more bag space than the L10’s retractable zoom.
The OM-5 II does offer more packing flexibility. Its lens can be removed so the body and lens can be stored in separate compartments, while the L10 must always be packed as a single unit.
Both cameras have fully articulating LCDs that can be folded inward. This protects the screen from scratches and impacts while the camera is packed or carried.
The OM-5 II provides more flexibility, but the L10 packages a faster standard zoom into a smaller and lighter ready-to-shoot camera.

Lens Versatility (Fixed Zoom vs. Interchangeable Lenses)
The Lumix L10’s fixed Leica zoom covers a useful 24–75mm-equivalent range with an f/1.7–2.8 maximum aperture. It is wide enough for landscapes, architecture and interiors while providing enough reach for portraits and details. Its bright aperture is also an advantage in low light.
Our reference OM System 12–45mm f/4 PRO gives the OM-5 II a slightly longer 24–90mm-equivalent range, along with strong close-up capability. However, its constant f/4 aperture is considerably slower than the L10’s lens.
The OM-5 II’s real advantage is the ability to choose a lens for the destination or subject. Available OM System options include ultra-wide lenses for landscapes and interiors, superzooms for one-lens travel, telephotos for wildlife, dedicated macro lenses and faster primes for low-light and night photography.
That flexibility comes with additional size, weight and expense, but it allows the OM-5 II to cover photographic situations that fall outside the L10’s fixed 24–75mm range.
The L10 has an unusually versatile lens for an all-in-one compact, but the OM-5 II can adapt to far more subjects and styles of photography.
Lens Versatility winner: OM System OM-5 II
Stabilization
The Lumix L10 does not have in-body image stabilization. Instead, its fixed Leica lens uses Panasonic’s POWER O.I.S. to reduce camera shake. Panasonic does not publish a stop rating for the system, but it should help when taking handheld photos at slower shutter speeds.
The OM System OM-5 II uses five-axis in-body image stabilization rated for up to 6.5 stops. Because the stabilization is built into the camera, it works with every attached lens. With certain stabilized OM System lenses, Sync IS can increase the rating to 7.5 stops. Our reference 12–45mm f/4 PRO does not support Sync IS, so the relevant figure for this comparison is 6.5 stops.
The Lumix L10’s faster lens partially offsets its stabilization disadvantage in low light. Its f/1.7 aperture at the wide end gathers over two stops more light than the 12–45mm lens at f/4, allowing a faster shutter speed. However, that does not help when shooting video, using smaller apertures or attaching a fast prime to the OM-5 II.
For dim interiors, nighttime streets, long exposures and handheld video, the OM-5 II’s five-axis IBIS is the more capable and flexible system.
Stabilization winner: OM System OM-5 II
Weather Sealing and Durability
The Lumix L10 is not weather-sealed, so it requires more care around rain, blowing dust, ocean spray and other conditions commonly encountered while traveling.
The OM-5 II has an IP53-rated body that is dustproof, splashproof and freezeproof to –10°C (14°F). The reference 12–45mm f/4 PRO is also weather-sealed and freezeproof, creating a better-protected travel kit.
Weather sealing does not make the OM-5 II waterproof, but it provides more confidence when photographing in light rain, around waterfalls or in dusty and cold environments. With the L10, I would be more likely to use a rain cover or put the camera away when conditions deteriorate.
For travelers who regularly photograph outdoors and cannot control the weather, the OM-5 II has the clear advantage.

Battery Life and Charging
Panasonic rates the Lumix L10 for approximately 420 photographs using the rear LCD or 410 using the electronic viewfinder. The OM-5 II is rated for approximately 310 photographs per charge.
Both cameras use removable batteries and support USB-C charging, making it possible to recharge from a power bank while traveling. However, the OM-5 II must be switched off while charging. The L10 also supports USB power delivery while the camera is operating.
Actual battery life will vary with burst shooting, video, wireless connections, computational photography and how frequently the screen or viewfinder is used. Computational features that capture and combine multiple images can be particularly demanding on the battery. Even so, the L10’s larger battery and higher rating provide more flexibility during a full day away from an electrical outlet.

Handling and Ease of Use
Both cameras include an electronic viewfinder and a fully articulating touchscreen, making it easier to compose in bright light or from unusual angles.
The L10’s fixed-lens design simplifies the shooting experience. Its physical controls, customizable Function Switch and customizable Quick Menu provide fast access to frequently used settings. It also offers more custom modes than the OM-5 II. However, the grip is shallower, and the power zoom makes startup slower than a typical interchangeable-lens camera.
The OM-5 II has a deeper grip, front and rear control dials, customizable buttons and a Super Control Panel that provides quick access to key shooting settings. It also adds OM System’s newer menu and a dedicated CP button for computational features.
Neither camera has an autofocus joystick, so photographers who frequently reposition the focus point must use the touchscreen or directional controls.
The L10 offers more extensive customization and a simpler all-in-one workflow, while the OM-5 II provides the more substantial grip. The better choice depends on whether customization or physical ergonomics matters more to the photographer.

Travel-Friendly Creative Features
The OM-5 II and Lumix L10 take different approaches to creative travel photography. The OM-5 II emphasizes computational capture, while the L10 focuses more on color, composition and producing images that are ready to share.
The OM-5 II’s dedicated CP button provides quick access to features including Handheld High Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking and HDR. These modes can capture additional detail, extend depth of field or create long-exposure effects without carrying as much supporting equipment.
The L10 also includes Focus Stacking, Live View Composite and Multiple Exposure. Its multi-aspect sensor maintains nearly the same angle of view when switching among 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios, providing more compositional flexibility without cropping as heavily.
Real Time LUT is the L10’s most distinctive creative feature. LUTs can be applied while shooting, and additional looks can be transferred from Lumix Lab. This can reduce editing time and make it easier to share finished-looking photographs while traveling.
The OM-5 II is stronger for computational capture, while the L10 offers more flexibility over color, aspect ratio and the ready-to-share workflow. Both approaches provide meaningful advantages for travel photography.

Overall Cost and Value
The black or silver Lumix L10 has a U.S. list price of $1,499.99. The OM-5 II with the 12–45mm f/4 PRO lens has a list price of $1,599.99, making the reference OM System kit $100 more expensive at MSRP.
The difference is relatively small, and both cameras provide considerable value in different ways. The OM-5 II kit includes weather sealing, in-body stabilization, computational photography features and the ability to add lenses as photographic interests or travel destinations change. Photographers who already own Micro Four Thirds lenses may find it the better value.
The L10 includes its bright 24–75mm-equivalent f/1.7–2.8 Leica zoom in the purchase price. Matching its combination of focal range and aperture on the OM-5 II would require a different lens—or more than one lens—adding cost, size and weight. The L10 is also a complete system that does not require additional lens purchases to realize its primary advantages.
The OM-5 II provides greater long-term versatility, but that flexibility can lead to considerably more spending as lenses are added. For travelers who want one capable camera without building a larger system, the less expensive L10 provides the stronger out-of-the-box value.

Which Is the Better Micro Four Thirds Travel Camera?
The final score is three wins for the Panasonic Lumix L10, three for the OM System OM-5 II and two ties. That result reflects two cameras that are well suited to travel photography for very different reasons.
The L10 is the better choice for travelers who want to carry one camera without building a larger system. It is smaller and lighter than the OM-5 II and 12–45mm PRO combination, provides longer battery life and includes a bright, versatile zoom. Its Real Time LUT features and simpler all-in-one design also make it well suited to trips where convenience and sharing photographs with minimal editing are priorities.
The OM-5 II is the better choice for photographers who want to adapt their kit to different destinations. Its interchangeable lenses, five-axis stabilization, weather sealing and computational features provide more options for landscapes, macro photography, low-light shooting and travel in difficult conditions. It also makes more sense for photographers who already own Micro Four Thirds lenses.
Neither camera is the better travel camera for everyone. I would choose the L10 for a city trip, family vacation or any journey where traveling light is the priority. For an outdoor or photography-focused trip where weather protection and specialized lenses matter more, I would choose the OM-5 II.
The better travel camera is ultimately the one whose features best match how you travel and the subjects you plan to photograph on your journey.
