How to Get the Most from the Panasonic Lumix L10 Function Switch

When Panasonic introduced the Lumix L10, most of the discussion revolved around its new sensor, premium compact design, and whether it was still “compact” enough. One feature that received much less attention is the three-position Function Switch on the front of the camera.

It looks simple, but after spending time with the L10, I’ve come to think it’s one of the camera’s most useful customization features. Whether you prefer shooting with fixed focal lengths, experimenting with different looks, or composing in multiple aspect ratios, the Function Switch lets you quickly adapt the camera to the way you like to shoot.

What Is the Function Switch?

Located on the front of the camera near the lens, the Function Switch is a three-position physical switch. Unlike a traditional function button that performs a single task, the Function Switch stores three preset values for one selected function.

To configure it, go to:

Menu → Custom → Operation → Fn Switch Setting

From there, choose the function you want to assign and then define what each of the three switch positions does.

The L10 offers five Function Switch assignments:

• Aspect Ratio – Quickly switch between image formats such as 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1.
• Step Zoom – Jump between preset focal lengths for a more “prime lens” shooting experience.
• Photo Style – Instantly switch between Panasonic’s built-in styles, including Standard, L.Classic, L.ClassicGold, and Leica Monochrome.
• Real Time LUT – Quickly apply different LUTs to give your JPEGs a unique creative look.
• Detecting Subject – Quickly change the camera’s subject detection mode based on what you’re photographing.

It’s a simple idea, but it gives the L10 a level of customization that’s both practical and enjoyable to use. In the rest of this article, I’ll take a closer look at each assignment and share a few tips to help you get the most from the Function Switch.

Step Zoom: A Different Way to Shoot

One of the more interesting Function Switch assignments is Step Zoom. Rather than continuously zooming in and out, Step Zoom lets you quickly jump between preset focal lengths such as 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, and 75mm.

One thing I discovered while using the L10 is that enabling Step Zoom completely changes how the zoom controls behave. While Step Zoom is active, the Power Zoom lever is disabled. To return to normal smooth zooming, simply move the Function Switch back to the default dot position.

That design encourages a different way of shooting. Instead of making tiny adjustments to your focal length, you’re committing to a few familiar perspectives and concentrating on composition instead.

I can see Step Zoom being particularly useful for street photography, where photographers often gravitate toward focal lengths like 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm. Instead of constantly adjusting the zoom, you can quickly move between those familiar viewpoints and stay focused on the moment unfolding in front of you.

Even if you don’t leave Step Zoom enabled all the time, it’s a fun feature to experiment with and may change the way you think about using a zoom lens.

Photo Style: Change the Look Instantly

Photo Style lets you quickly switch between Panasonic’s built-in looks, including options like Standard, Vivid, L.Classic, L.ClassicGold, and Leica Monochrome.

I enjoy experimenting with different Photo Styles while I’m shooting because they can completely change the feel of a scene. A landscape that looks great in color may suddenly become much more compelling in Leica Monochrome, while L.ClassicGold can add a warm, nostalgic look to a travel scene.

Instead of waiting until you’re back at your computer, the Function Switch lets you compare different looks as you’re composing your image. You may discover a style that you wouldn’t have considered otherwise.

Real Time LUT: Creative Looks Made Easy

If you’ve been creating or downloading LUTs with Lumix Lab, assigning Real Time LUT to the Function Switch is one of the easiest ways to use them in the field.

Unlike Photo Styles, Real Time LUT lets you apply your own creative looks directly in the camera. You might create one LUT for vibrant travel photography, another for dramatic black-and-white images, and another for soft, muted landscapes.

The Function Switch makes it easy to compare those looks while you’re photographing the same scene, encouraging experimentation before you ever press the shutter.

Aspect Ratio: Compose Before You Crop

Panasonic ships the L10 with the Function Switch assigned to Aspect Ratio, and it’s actually a sensible default.

If you enjoy composing for different formats instead of cropping later, switching between 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 becomes almost effortless.

One advantage of the L10’s multi-aspect sensor is that, unlike many cameras that simply crop the image when you change aspect ratios, it maintains nearly the same angle of view across each format. That makes switching between aspect ratios feel more natural and encourages you to compose for the final image while you’re shooting.

I like seeing the composition change in the viewfinder before I press the shutter. It encourages me to think about framing differently instead of relying on cropping later.

Landscape photographers may prefer a wider 16:9 composition, while square compositions can work well for architecture or close-up photography.  It’s a simple feature, but one that encourages photographers to think about composition before pressing the shutter.

Detecting Subject: Stay Ready for What’s Next

Another useful Function Switch assignment is Detecting Subject.

Rather than navigating through menus, the Function Switch lets you quickly switch between Panasonic’s subject detection modes based on what you’re photographing.

Imagine spending the afternoon doing street photography. You might begin by photographing people walking through the city, then switch to Urban Sports for skateboarders, practice panning with passing cars, and finish with motorcycles cruising downtown. The Function Switch lets you quickly select the appropriate detection mode without interrupting your shooting.

Photography is full of unexpected moments. Being able to quickly switch to the appropriate subject detection mode helps you stay focused on the scene and ready when the next opportunity appears.

Tips for Using the Function Switch

The Function Switch is powerful on its own, but these two tips make it even more flexible.

Add It to My Menu

If you like changing the Function Switch assignment for different outings, add Fn Switch Setting to My Menu. It puts the setting just a few button presses away, making it easy to customize the camera before heading out.

Pair It with Custom Modes

The Function Switch becomes even more useful when paired with the camera’s Custom Modes.

You can assign a different Function Switch setting to each Custom Mode, creating camera setups for different photography styles or shooting situations. With a turn of the mode dial, your preferred Function Switch assignment is ready to go.
